Research Suggests Measuring Success in Minutes, Not Money

I’m going to go out on a limb here. I would guess that if you asked most people what it would take to make them feel successful, not very many of them would answer ‘print supply chain management.” But based on some research I recently read about, it’s not such a far-fetched idea. Here’s why.

In a recent post on inc.com, Jeff Haden (whose writing I enjoy) talked about a survey in which 1,000 Americans were asked what sort of lifestyle “upgrades” it would take to make them feel successful. The results of the survey, conducted by Discover, were quite interesting.

The Cost of “Success” Can Be Steep

Respondents mentioned owning an “ideal” home and car. That ideal home would need to be worth, on average, two times as much as the home the currently lived in. (In the Midwest where I live, it would need to be worth nearly three times as much.)  The standard of success where the car is concerned was similar. Respondents said they would need to have a car worth double the value of their current “ride.”

It’s understandable to want those “upgrades” but such significant changes require a great deal of money. For most, that “feeling” of success may prove elusive. And the article points out that other research has shown that as income climbs above $75,000 per year, earning more has little effect on happiness or the feeling of success.

Make Time for Success

But there’s good news. Something else does have an effect on happiness and feelings of success. I think the other things that respondents in the study mentioned would make them feel successful are the true key to making it happen. Check out these two items:

  • More than half of the respondents said that having a housekeeper would be a sign of success.
  • Ninety percent cited the ability to take vacations was a key indicator

Know what those last two have in common? I think I do. They both indicate a desire for having not just more money, but more time. A housekeeper allows you to spend less time on household chores, so you can do other things instead. And vacations—time away from work—are clearly the result of having the time to take them. (Other research has shown that a large percentage of American workers don’t even take all the vacation time they have coming!)
